Artificial intelligence has a talent for making weak habits feel efficient.
That is part of what makes this moment so powerful and so dangerous. AI can summarize, rewrite, brainstorm, code, organize, translate, answer questions, and clean up messy work in seconds. For people buried under mental clutter or repetitive tasks, that feels almost miraculous. The machine steps in, removes friction, and gives back momentum. In plenty of situations, that is genuinely useful. Used well, AI can help people think more clearly, move faster, and spend less time drowning in low-value work.
But there is another side to that bargain, and more people are starting to feel it even if they do not always name it directly.
The question is no longer whether AI can make us more productive. It obviously can. The more important question is what happens when speed rises faster than judgment. What happens when people begin outsourcing not just tedious tasks, but the actual strain of thinking? Most discussions about AI dependence focus on job displacement, cheating, or productivity. Those matter, but there is a more intimate layer emerging underneath them. People are increasingly using AI in ways that blur the line between tool and relationship. The machine is always available, never impatient, rarely confrontational, and highly responsive. It gives the appearance of attention on demand. For a lonely, anxious, or overwhelmed user, that can feel comforting. But comfort is not the same thing as health. That distinction matters because the more convincing the simulation becomes, the easier it is for users to over-trust it or emotionally over-invest in it. That would be less concerning if people were consistently using AI to deepen their own thinking. Sometimes they are. But often they are using it to bypass friction instead.
